Dr. Maxine Lavon Montgomery is a Professor of English at Florida State University specializing in African Diasporic, Post-Colonial, and Contemporary Black Women’s fiction, alongside Post-Apocalyptic Literature and Critical Race Studies. She holds degrees from Florida State University (BA, MA) and a PhD in African American Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her research focuses on interrogating racial and gendered boundaries in literature, with particular attention to black women’s contributions to speculative and post-apocalyptic genres. Current projects include The Post-Apocalyptic Black Female Imagination (under contract with Bloomsbury) and Un-Zombifying Blackness (in proposal phase).
Publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in journals like African American Review and Journal of Black Studies. She has authored six books analyzing authors such as Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, and Edwidge Danticat. A four-time recipient of teaching excellence awards, Dr. Montgomery’s work bridges literary analysis with social justice themes.
Her interdisciplinary approach integrates cultural studies, gender theory, and postcolonial frameworks. Upcoming projects emphasize vernacular culture’s role in redefining racial narratives.
