Dr. Maximilian Schuh is a Lecturer at the Department for the History of the High and Later Middle Ages at Freie Universität Berlin. A Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, his current research focuses on producing a critical edition of 14th-century English scholar William Merle's weather forecasting treatises De prognosticatione aeris and Regulae ad futuram aeris temperiem prognosticandam, addressing the marginalization of medieval Latin weather prognostication traditions. His work bridges philology, intellectual history, and environmental studies through collaboration with Ota Pavlíček's research group.
Education:
- PhD in Medieval History (University of Münster, 2013)
- State Examination in History, German Language & Literature, and Educational Sciences (University of München, 2006)
Specializing in 15th-century University of Ingolstadt studies and 14th-century environmental perceptions in England, Schuh explores intersections between humanities and natural sciences. His projects analyze Merle's empirical approach to weather prediction within Oxford's late medieval intellectual context, challenging conventional astro-meteorological frameworks through critical editions and thematic commentary.
Research Trends: Recent publications emphasize interdisciplinary methodologies combining historical analysis with climate science, including stalagmite-based climate reconstructions and socio-cultural historical narratives. His work on Renaissance humanism's popularization highlights cultural transmission mechanisms across academic and public spheres.
Scientific Awards:
- Feodor-Lynen-Fellow (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation)
As a Consolidator Fellow at Munich's Historische Kolleg (2023–2024), he advanced collaborative research on medieval scientific traditions. His academic roles span multiple German institutions, including lecturer positions at Freie Universität Berlin since 2019 and editorial contributions to key historical research companions.
