Dr. Maximilian Hartmuth is a permanent Research Associate at the Department of Art History within the University of Vienna's Faculty of History and Cultural Studies. His academic career includes leading the ERC project 'Islamic Architecture and Orientalizing Style in Habsburg Bosnia, 1878-1918' (2018-2023) and contributing to the FWF project 'Centre and Periphery? Islamic Architecture in Ottoman Macedonia, 1383-1520' (2014-2018).
His educational background includes:
- Doctorate in Art History, Sabancı University, Istanbul (2006-2011)
- Studies at University of Vienna, University of Art Belgrade, and Koç University (1998-2006)
Hartmuth specializes in Architectural History of Central and Southeastern Europe (13th-20th centuries), with concentrated expertise in Islamic Architecture in the Balkans and Modern Architectural History of Vienna. His interdisciplinary approach integrates art sociology and geography to examine spatial-socioeconomic relationships in art production, alongside significant contributions to museology and cultural heritage discourse.
