Maxime Marie

Maxime Marie is a Lecturer in Geography at the University of Caen Normandy, affiliated with the UMR ESO 6590 CNRS research unit. As a teacher-researcher under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), Marie serves as Scientific Director for the University Data Platform (PUD) of Caen from 2018-2023 and coordinates the 'Territoires en transition' master's program track at the University of Caen Normandy from 2021-2026.

Marie's research focuses on social and rural geography with emphasis on agricultural, land, and food systems. Their work investigates territorialized food systems, agricultural systems dynamics, land dynamics, farmers' identities, and short food circuits across Europe (particularly Normandy), Burkina Faso, and other Western regions. Marie has coordinated significant research projects including the FRUGAL project (Urban Forms and Food Governance, 2016-2020) and currently participates in the ANR cAnOPee project and the Feader OBSALIM project (Caen-Normandy Metropolis Agri-Food Observatory).

Marie's publication record shows a strong focus on urban-rural food systems, residential patterns in rural spaces, and agricultural landscape transformations. The research demonstrates consistent methodological approaches using spatial analysis, geographical information systems (GIS), and field investigations across multiple European contexts and West Africa. Recent work increasingly addresses ecological transition challenges through food self-production practices and local food system resilience.

As a research supervisor, Marie has directed doctoral work including Lena Jégat's 2020 thesis on food self-production from family gardens. Marie collaborates extensively within the ESO research network and with institutions across Western France, coordinating multi-institutional projects that bridge academic research with practical food governance applications.
