Maxim N. Smirnov is an Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor) at the University of Augsburg's Institute of Mathematics, affiliated with the Algebra and Number Theory research group. He received a positive evaluation in January 2019 equivalent to a habilitation. Previously, he held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Algebra and Geometry (IAG) in Hannover, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in Bures-sur-Yvette. He completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM) in Bonn under Yuri Manin.
His research focuses on the intersection of algebra, geometry, and theoretical physics, with emphasis on:
- Algebraic structures inspired by string theory
- Gromov-Witten invariants and quantum cohomology
- Derived categories of coherent sheaves
- Mirror symmetry phenomena
He teaches Kommutative Algebra and organizes departmental seminars including the Oberseminar zur Algebra und Zahlentheorie and Augsburger Mathematisches Kolloquium. He has coordinated several academic events focusing on algebraic geometry and mathematical physics.
