Dragos Oprea is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2005 and held postdoctoral positions as a Samuelson Fellow and Szego Assistant Professor at Stanford University from 2005 to 2008. His research focuses on algebraic geometry and mathematical physics, particularly moduli theory, stable morphisms, Gromov-Witten invariants, stable sheaves, and Donaldson-type invariants.

- Ph.D., Mathematics, MIT (2005)
His work explores the intersection of moduli spaces and tautological classes, contributing to theories involving Verlinde bundles, Segre integrals, Gromov-Witten theory, and Donaldson-Thomas invariants. Collaborations with Alina Marian, Rahul Pandharipande, and others have advanced understanding of strange duality conjectures and intersection theory on algebraic varieties.
Oprea has received prestigious awards, including the Hellman Fellowship (2010), Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2011), and NSF CAREER Grant (2012).
