Dr. Max Weigelin is a Researcher at the Institute of Sociology within the Faculty of Philosophy I at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Since April 2024, he has been working in the Department of Economic and Organizational Sociology under Prof. Konstanze Senge. Previously, from October 2019 to April 2024, he was a Research Associate in the Process-Oriented Sociology Department working on the DFG project "Accounting and Transformative Effects in Professional Football" under Prof. Robert Schmidt. Earlier positions include research work under Prof. Stefan Hirschauer in General Sociology and Gender Studies (2018-2019) and tutoring in Sociological Theory (2015).
Dr. Weigelin earned his Master of Arts in Sociology at Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz (2013-2018), with an MA thesis titled "The silent yet audible situation – A small ethnography of the reading room with regard to a sociology of acoustics." He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (with Philosophy minor) from the same institution (2009-2013).
His research focuses on qualitative methods, particularly ethnography, with specializations in practical theory, sociology of the senses, interaction sociology (especially Goffman), sociology of evaluation, organizational sociology, economic sociology, and sports sociology. His work bridges sensory experiences with social interaction, examining how sensory phenomena shape social practices and organizational dynamics, with particular attention to auditory experiences and their social implications. His methodological approach combines micro-sociological analysis with sensory ethnography to explore rule interpretation, decision-making, and meaning construction in specific contexts.
Dr. Weigelin's publications reveal a consistent focus on sports as a lens for understanding broader sociological phenomena, particularly evaluation practices. His work demonstrates how sensory ethnography can illuminate micro-processes of social interaction in sports contexts, from referee decision-making to stadium atmospheres. The publications show increasing sophistication in connecting sensory experiences with organizational dynamics and evaluation practices.
Dr. Weigelin has been actively involved in teaching at both bachelor's and master's levels, offering courses on Microsociological Organizational Research, Empirical Organizational Research, Ethnographic Research on Game and Sports Cultures, Sociology of the Senses, and Introduction to Economic Sociology. He has also organized significant academic events including the 2023 conference "Evaluation Sociology in the Field of Sports" and the 2020 conference of the DGS section "Sociology of the Body and Sport." His conference presentations demonstrate his growing influence in developing sensory sociology and evaluation sociology as interconnected subfields.
