Max Spitzer is a Visiting Professor of Graphic Design and Foundations at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), located in Allendale, Michigan. He holds an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2021) and a BFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design (2012). His roles include teaching at K-12 institutions, managing educational programs at Omi International Art Center, and leading workshops such as 'How to Critique Towards Love.'
Spitzer’s artistic practice merges tactile materials with linguistic communication, addressing themes of memory, cultural artifacts, and material transformation. His works have been exhibited at institutions like the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and Vermont Studio Center.
Recent projects include Cheltenham Sticks (2024), Reading Materials (2023), and PC:S (Lead Melakhot) (2023), exploring materiality, text, and institutional critique. His residency at the Blanksteen Center (2023) and the GuSH Grant (2019) highlight his academic and artistic contributions.
His teaching focuses on foundational art practices and time-based media (ART153, ART296). Collaborations include Reading Materials with Talya Petrillo and exhibition support from institutions like the Slifka Center.
