Max Jack

Max Jack (he/him) is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University Bloomington, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. His research bridges Sound Studies, Affect Theory, and Anti-capitalist Movements, focusing on unruly sonic collectives and political crowds.

His ethnographic work examines how football ultras, protest soundscapes, and subcultural scenes challenge social norms. Recent publications analyze the atmospherics of discontent in sports fandom and antifascist activism.

Max Jack's teaching emphasizes World Music and Culture, Soundscapes of Democracy, and Subculture Ethnography. His research has received recognition through a Senior Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (2021-2023).
