Mauro Overend

Prof. Mauro Overend serves as Professor of Structural Design & Mechanics within the Department of Architectural Engineering + Technology at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. His work focuses on improving mechanical performance and energy efficiency of buildings while addressing end-of-life material challenges in construction.

Overend obtained his bachelor's degree in architecture and civil engineering in Malta, followed by a PhD in structural mechanics from a UK university in 2002. His career path included engineering consultancy work in London on cutting-edge building projects, then research positions at the universities of Nottingham and Cambridge before joining TU Delft.

His research centers on sustainable structural solutions, particularly examining how traditional building materials like steel, concrete and glass can be used more efficiently throughout their lifecycle. Overend challenges the industry's focus on construction-phase efficiency by advocating for designs that consider material reuse and recycling. His "adaptive structures" approach includes innovations like "switchable insulation" components that adjust to heating or cooling needs using minimal energy, addressing the conflict between energy-efficient building envelopes and material recyclability.

Recent publications reveal a strong focus on glass structures, seismic performance of building envelopes, and thermal resilience to climate change. His work bridges structural engineering with materials science and electrical engineering, exploring how smart systems can create more responsive buildings that use resources efficiently while maintaining safety. Overend emphasizes the importance of translating laboratory research into practical applications through partnerships with industry.

As an educator, Overend prepares future designers to focus on conceptual design stages while leveraging computational tools for implementation. He teaches courses including MEGA, Technoledge Glass Structures, and Sustainable Architectural courses, emphasizing the integration of emerging technologies into building design processes.
