Mauro Guillen is the William H. Wurster Professor of Multinational Management and Vice Dean of Wharton's MBA Program for Executives at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. As one of the most original thinkers at Wharton, he is an expert on global market trends and a sought-after speaker and consultant. He combines his training as a sociologist at Yale and as a business economist from Spain to methodically identify and quantify promising opportunities at the intersection of demographic, economic, and technological developments. His online classes on Coursera and edX have attracted over 100,000 participants worldwide, and his presentation on global market trends has become a permanent feature of over fifty executive education programs annually.
Dr. Guillen's research spans economic sociology, emerging multinational firms, globalization, international banking strategies, international political economy, multinational management, and organizational theory. His work demonstrates how demographic shifts, technological advances, and economic changes interact to shape business landscapes. He shows that one can accurately forecast trends by systematically following the babies and following the money into the future. His interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, economics, and business management to provide unique insights into global market dynamics and institutional frameworks that affect business practices across borders.
His publications reveal consistent focus on international business expansion, institutional theory, and political economy. Guillen's research examines how institutions shape business practices across borders, with particular attention to emerging markets and multinational corporations. He has made significant contributions to understanding the relationship between political systems (monarchies vs. republics) and economic outcomes, the internationalization patterns of firms from emerging markets, and the institutional factors affecting corporate governance and financial markets. His work often combines quantitative assessments with illuminating case studies from business, politics, and everyday life.
