Maurice Patterson serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Management & Marketing at the University of Limerick's College of Business, where he has maintained an academic position since January 2002. With over 40 peer-reviewed publications and co-authorship of two direct/relationship marketing textbooks, his scholarly contributions appear in leading journals including Consumption, Markets and Culture, European Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Management. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marketing Management and Journal of Consumer Behaviour while accepting new PhD students.
His research program centers on Consumer Culture Theory with specialized focus on Consumption and Identity, Consumption and Embodiment, Sound Studies, Commodification, and Advertising. Patterson's work critically examines how sonic environments, bodily experiences, and place-based narratives shape consumer behavior. His methodological approach frequently employs ethnographic techniques to investigate everyday consumption practices within urban and tourism contexts.
Analysis of his 2021-2025 publications reveals evolving research trajectories examining place branding ambiguity (Wild Atlantic Way), sonic ecologies in tourism settings (New Orleans), and smart city positioning in Brazil. These works demonstrate increasing integration of affect theory, spatial analysis, and narrative frameworks to understand consumption in complex environments, with strong emphasis on how consumers navigate ambiguous brand landscapes through embodied experiences.
Dr. Patterson's scholarly recognition includes:
- ANBAR Citation of Excellence (1999)
- Best Paper in Marketing Management (2001)
- Best Paper in Consumer Research (2011)
- Best Paper in Critical Marketing (2013)
He maintains active professional engagement through long-standing memberships in the Academy of Marketing (UK) since 1995, Association for Consumer Research since 2001, and Direct Marketing Research Consortium. His current research supervision focuses on consumer culture phenomena while pursuing collaborative projects examining urban consumption spaces and sensory marketing.
