Dr. Maureen W. Lovett is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto, holding joint appointments in the Faculty of Medicine and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). She serves as a Senior Scientist in the Neurosciences and Mental Health Program and directs the Learning Disabilities Research Program (LDRP) at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Her research focuses on developing evidence-based interventions for severe reading disabilities across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
Her work examines critical factors in effective literacy interventions, including predictors of treatment response, generalization of learning gains, and long-term maintenance strategies. Recently, she has spearheaded large-scale knowledge translation initiatives through Empower™ Reading—a program implemented in 21 Canadian school boards, where over 800 trained teachers have supported more than 8,000 struggling readers.
Dr. Lovett contributed to the National Academies of Science (NRC) Learning Sciences Panel (2009-2011), which catalyzed her research in adult literacy. As Toronto site director for the CSAL Center, she develops decoding and comprehension interventions for adults and collaborates with computational linguistics experts to integrate these into intelligent tutoring platforms.
Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Institute of Education Sciences (IES), and Canadian federal/provincial agencies.
