Maureen Lankhuizen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Spatial Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with both the School of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Sciences. She holds a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen (2009) and a Master's from Maastricht University (1994). Her research focuses on spatial and geographic interaction models, including gravity equations for trade/foreign direct investment, regional development, and quantitative methods like input-output analysis. She has taught at VU Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, and Amsterdam University College.
Key research projects include studies on the economic impact of the Corona pandemic, sustainable accessibility of the Randstad region, and the Noord/Zuidlijn railway's effect on real estate markets. She received the Regional Studies Association Best Paper Award (2020) for her work in economic analysis. Her teaching spans courses in Earth Economics, Transport Management, and Natural/Social Sciences.
Major grants include NWO-funded projects on resilient regions and sustainable energy policies. Collaborations involve multidisciplinary teams addressing urban development, transportation, and regional data construction. Her work contributes to UN SDGs related to sustainable cities (SDG 11) and responsible consumption (SDG 12).
