Maura Nsonwu

Maura Nsonwu is a Professor in the School of Social Work within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University. A licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), she holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations from UNC Greensboro. Her clinical and research expertise spans refugee resettlement, human trafficking, healthcare, child welfare, and social work education.

She co-authored the textbook 'Human Trafficking: Applying Research, Theory and Case Studies' and is a Research Fellow at the Center for New North Carolinians (UNC Greensboro), collaborating with resettlement agencies and the UNHCR. As President of the Association for Immigration and Refugee Service Professionals, she advocates for professionals in immigration fields.

Her research employs community-based participatory methods with refugee communities (African, Montagnard, Latino) and interdisciplinary health education initiatives. She has led projects delivering culturally responsive mental health services and interprofessional healthcare training.
