Prof. Maude Bass-Krueger is a Professor in Art History at Ghent University since 2020, specializing in visual and material culture from the 19th to 21st centuries with a focus on fashion, architecture, and museum practices. Her research bridges interdisciplinary themes of gender, historiography, and cultural heritage.
- BA and MA in History from Wesleyan University and Sciences-Po Paris
- PhD in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture from Bard Graduate Center (2016)
Her research examines intersections between fashion and architecture, historical authenticity in design, and the evolution of fashion history as a discipline. Notable projects include:
- Current: Monographs on architectural drawings (Envois de Rome) and the origins of fashion history in France
- Networks: Co-founded Revers - Belgian Fashion Research Network (2021)
- Exhibition Curation: Mode & Femmes 14/18 (2017), French Fashion, Women, and the First World War (2019)
Recent publications address fashion heritage consciousness (2024), Belgian fashion pre-Antwerp Six (2024), and the cult of authenticity in French fashion (2023). She teaches courses in Fashion/Textile History, Material Culture, and Curatorial Studies.
Scientific awards include the Zvi Yavetz Fellowship (2015-2016) and HERA-funded PriArc postdoctoral research (2017-2019). She serves as Internationalization Coordinator for her department and co-directs the Vandenhove Center.
