Mattia Bianchi

Mattia Bianchi is a Professor of Innovation Management at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), holding the Matts Carlgren Chair in Business Administration. He leads the Department of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology and serves as Platform Director at the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets. His academic roles include directing the SSE MBA innovation module (2015–2022) and the Master Program in Business and Management (2014–2018).

Education: BSc, MSc, and PhD in Management, Economics, and Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, plus an International Diploma in Management from Imperial College London. Visiting scholarships at University of Calgary and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

Research focuses on innovation management, new product development, and entrepreneurship, emphasizing overcoming project failures like scope creep and overdesign. Key themes include open innovation, agile/lean processes, and design thinking. Over 60 publications in journals such as Research Policy and Journal of Product Innovation Management.

Awards include SSE’s 2015 Research Award, 2018 MSc Teacher of the Year, and 2019 ASFOR Best Under-40 Italian Professor. Active in executive education and curriculum design at multiple academic levels.

Professional contributions span consulting projects on design thinking, innovation strategy, and organizational agility. Collaborates with industry on sustainable markets and technology commercialization through the Mistra Center.
