Matti Kutila

Matti Kutila serves as Research Team Leader for the Automated Vehicles Unit (BA4801) at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, driving innovation in autonomous mobility systems. His work spans sensor technology, vehicle safety, and intelligent infrastructure with direct contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Research focuses include:

• Automated Vehicle Perception: Developing weather-adaptive camera systems and sensor fusion for adverse conditions
• Connected Mobility: Creating V2X communication protocols for cooperative perception and intersection safety
• Positioning Systems: Advancing UWB-based localization for high-precision vehicle navigation
• Commercial Deployment: Addressing regulatory and operational challenges for autonomous vehicle services

Kutila currently leads five major EU-funded initiatives including ROADVIEW (automated driving in extreme weather) and REALLOCATE (urban space redesign for active transport), managing multi-million-euro budgets across international consortia. His research demonstrates strong translation from theory to practical implementation, evidenced by multiple patents and industry partnerships.

As head of VTT's Automated Vehicles unit, he oversees a high-output research team producing 4-8 publications annually since 2005, with recent work appearing in Transportation Research Procedia and IEEE conferences. The unit maintains close collaboration with automotive OEMs, infrastructure providers, and European research networks to advance autonomous mobility solutions.
