Matti Gurreck

Matti Gurreck is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, affiliated with the Law School within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. He conducts research within the INTEL project (funded by the European Research Council, 2024-2029) and the FOUNDATIONS project (funded by the Academy of Finland, 2024-2028), both focused on developing the foundations of energy law in Europe.

His primary research interests include EU and international energy law, environmental law, and food law. Gurreck examines critical intersections between regulatory frameworks for energy transition, environmental protection, and industrial policy, with particular focus on the tension between accelerating renewable energy deployment and maintaining nature conservation standards.

Gurreck's recent publications analyze the evolving EU legal landscape for energy transition, with emphasis on the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and the Clean Industrial Deal. His work critically examines how regulatory simplification efforts might impact environmental safeguards while attempting to accelerate renewable energy deployment across Europe.

Gurreck is an active member of the research community through his involvement with the Center for Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Law (CCEEL) and professional organizations including the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) and GreenDeal-NET.

Gurreck obtained his PhD with a thesis on EU soft law and continues to explore the implementation challenges of EU energy and environmental legislation. His research contributes to ongoing debates about balancing industrial competitiveness with environmental protection in the European Green Deal era.
