Prof. Dr. Matthijs Blankers serves as Endowed Professor of 'Effectiveness of Integrated Addiction Interventions in Relation to Mental Health' at Tilburg University's Tranzo department (Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences) since September 2025, while concurrently holding Chief Science Officer and senior researcher roles at Trimbos Institute and Arkin. His work bridges scientific research, clinical practice, and healthcare policy through sustainable institutional partnerships.
His research critically examines addiction interventions through three interconnected lenses: mental health comorbidities, social context dynamics, and digital environment impacts. Focusing on scientific validation gaps—where current practices often lack robust evidence—he develops frameworks to determine what works for whom in substance use treatment. A pioneer in digital intervention efficacy, he leverages e-health tools for personalized care while analyzing how online spaces simultaneously reinforce risk behaviors and enable therapeutic support.
Embedded within the Academic Workplace on Addiction consortium, his work receives dedicated funding from the Trimbos Institute for a five-year term. This collaborative ecosystem—spanning Novadic-Kentron, Jeroen Bosch Hospital, Healthcare Information Provision Foundation, and Positive Lifestyle Foundation—enables co-creation of healthcare innovations. Knowledge transfer occurs through dual channels: peer-reviewed publications in international journals and practitioner-facing resources including policy briefings, clinical fact sheets, and training workshops.
