Matthijs A. Smit is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, within the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences under the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on lithosphere dynamics, metamorphic processes, and geochronology techniques such as Lu-Hf and U-Pb dating. He has held academic positions at UBC since 2014, including a prior role as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Copenhagen (2013–2014). His educational background includes a PhD in Mineralogy from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (2010) and an MSc in Earth Sciences from Universiteit Utrecht (2006).
Research interests include continental crust formation, mantle evolution, and the interplay between fluid flow and deformation in subduction zones. Notable projects involve collaborative initiatives funded by CFI, BC-KDF, and NSERC, integrating fieldwork, petrology, and mass spectrometry analyses. Recent publications (2020–2025) emphasize studies of crustal evolution, metamorphic chronology, and geodynamic processes in regions like the Himalayas, Pamir, and Central Asian Orogenic Belt.
- Key Research Themes: Archean crustal growth, metamorphic P-T-t paths, fluid-rock interaction, and geochronological method development.
- Recent Trends: Focus on garnet Lu-Hf chronology, high-pressure metamorphic belts, and subduction initiation mechanisms.
He has advised numerous PhD and MSc students, including current supervisees Kira Musiyachenko and Jeroen Goumans, and has a postdoctoral researcher Mingshuai Zhu. Awards include the prestigious Canada Research Chair designation, reflecting his impactful contributions to Earth sciences.
