Matthias Zimmermann

Matthias Zimmermann is a researcher affiliated with ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), specializing in microbial ecology and single-cell analysis. His notable publication in Frontiers in Microbiology (2015) demonstrated the technical feasibility of measuring phenotypic heterogeneity in rare bacterial species in their natural habitat, specifically studying nitrogen and carbon fixation in Chlorobium phaeobacteroides from the meromictic lake Lago di Cadagno. This work revealed positive correlation between nitrogen and carbon fixation activities among individual cells, suggesting metabolic interactions at the cellular level.
