معرفی
Matthias Zimmermann is a researcher affiliated with ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), specializing in microbial ecology and single-cell analysis. His work focuses on understanding phenotypic heterogeneity in bacterial populations within natural environments.
His primary research interests include:
- Microbial metabolism and physiology
- Single-cell analysis methodologies
- Phenotypic heterogeneity in microbial populations
- Environmental microbiology and microbial ecology
- Nitrogen and carbon fixation processes
- Green sulfur bacteria physiology
Dr. Zimmermann employs advanced techniques including Flow Cell Sorting (FACS), catalyzed-reporter deposition fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH), and Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (NanoSIMS) to investigate metabolic traits at the single-cell level in natural habitats. His research has significantly contributed to understanding how genetically identical microorganisms display marked variability in phenotypic traits within the same environmental context.
His notable publication in Frontiers in Microbiology (2015) demonstrated the technical feasibility of measuring phenotypic heterogeneity in rare bacterial species in their natural habitat, specifically studying nitrogen and carbon fixation in Chlorobium phaeobacteroides from the meromictic lake Lago di Cadagno. This work revealed positive correlation between nitrogen and carbon fixation activities among individual cells, suggesting metabolic interactions at the cellular level.
Dr. Zimmermann collaborates extensively with researchers from multiple institutions including ETH Zurich, Eawag, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, indicating his integration within a broad network of environmental microbiologists.
