Prof. Dr. Matthias Winzen serves as Professor of Art History and Art Theory at Saar College of Fine Arts (HBK Saar), where he chairs the Art Education Examination Board and directs the Master Curating and Exhibition Management and Master Museum Education programs. Concurrently, he directs the Museum of 19th Century Art and Technology (Museum LA8) in Baden-Baden since 2009, following his tenure as Director of Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (1999-2005).
His research pioneers visual studies through a practitioner-scholar lens, rigorously analyzing concrete individual artworks as dissident cultural techniques while rejecting discourse-theoretical and neo-moral reductions. Core interests include public art interventions in urban space, monument studies, art-technology relationships, and museum pedagogy. His teaching spans historical surveys from Dürer to AI-era practices, with upcoming courses like 'ChatGPT, art and artificiality' (Winter 2025/26) examining algorithmic creativity.
- Carl Einstein Prize for Art Criticism (1994)
As supervisor, Winzen mentors practice-based projects bridging theory and activism—from ocean conservation initiatives (#MeerKönnen) to experimental museum pedagogy (Games/App gehen-bleiben). His curatorial leadership includes the landmark 'World Tour. Art from Germany' exhibition (2013) which toured 10+ international venues. At HBK Saar, he oversees the institutional gallery while integrating his extensive monographic catalogues on artists like Thomas Ruff and Marlene Dumas into pedagogical frameworks.
