Matthias Tesche is a scientific staff member and group leader at the Institute of Meteorology, University of Leipzig, where he leads the Aerosols and Clouds research group since 2019. He holds the academic rank of Privatdozent after completing his habilitation in Meteorology in 2020. Prior to returning to Leipzig, he served as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, UK.
His educational background includes:
- Diploma in Meteorology (2006) from the University of Leipzig
- Doctorate in Meteorology (2011) from the University of Leipzig
- Habilitation in Meteorology (2020) from the University of Leipzig
Tesche's research focuses on aerosols, clouds, and their interactions, utilizing active and passive remote sensing observations from ground and space. His work spans climate effects of aviation, mixed-phase clouds, and aerosol-cloud interactions in pristine environments. He employs satellite and airborne remote sensing data to study cloud microphysics and aerosol impacts on climate.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in using advanced remote sensing techniques to quantify aerosol-cloud interactions and their climate implications, with particular emphasis on marine and polar environments. The research often involves developing novel data sets and cloud-by-cloud analysis methods to address uncertainties in climate models.
Scientific awards include:
- MOPGA research fellowship (2019)
Tesche has secured multiple research grants from BMBF, DAAD, DFG, and EU. These projects address aerosol-cloud interactions, Arctic mixed-phase clouds, contrail properties in cirrus clouds, and photovoltaic performance forecasting. He collaborates with organizational units including Theoretical Meteorology, Atmospheric Radiation, and Arctic Climate Change at the University of Leipzig.
He leads the Aerosols and Clouds research group at the Leipzig Institute of Meteorology, conducting cutting-edge observational studies on atmospheric aerosols, cloud processes, and their climate impacts using ground-based, airborne, and spaceborne remote sensing platforms.
