Dr. André Ehrlich is a Researcher in Atmospheric Radiation at the University of Leipzig, where he has been employed since May 2009. His research focuses on the interpretation and application of airborne and ground-based measurements of solar and terrestrial atmospheric radiation to infer cloud and surface properties and quantify their influence on Earth's radiation budget.
Dr. Ehrlich completed his PhD in Meteorology at the University of Mainz (2006-2009) with a thesis on "The Impact of Ice Crystals on Radiative Forcing and Remote Sensing of Arctic Boundary-Layer Mixed-Phase Clouds." He earned his Diplom in Meteorology from the University of Leipzig (1999-2005) with research on "High-resolution turbulence measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer using a balloon-borne measurement platform."
His research interests span Atmospheric Radiation, Cloud Physics, Remote Sensing, Climate Research, Meteorology, Arctic Climate Studies, and Radiative Forcing. Dr. Ehrlich's work primarily investigates how measurements can be used to understand cloud properties and their impact on Earth's energy balance.
Dr. Ehrlich is currently leading two major research projects: "Characterization of changes in the radiative forcing of shallow and high convection" (2022-2027) and "Characterization of Arctic mixed-phase clouds" as part of the TRR 172/B03 project (2016-2027), both funded by the German Research Foundation.
As an educator, Dr. Ehrlich teaches across multiple levels of meteorology education:
- B.Sc. Meteorology: "Meteorological Measurement Technology," "Calibration of Meteorological Sensors," "Application of Meteorological Instruments," "Meteorological Seminar," and "Meteorological Field Measurements"
- M.Sc. Meteorology: "Atmospheric Radiation," "Airborne Physical Measuring Methods," "Terrestrial Radiative Transfer," and coordination of "Current Research in Meteorology" and "Advanced Scientific Working in Meteorology"
He also serves as Program Manager for the Meteorology program, overseeing lecture schedules and providing student advice.
