Professor Matthias Rudolph serves as Professor of Building Technology and Climate-Friendly Design in the Department of Architecture at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. Since July 2024, he has held the position of Vice-Rector for Internationalization and is a Member of the Rectorate, Senate, and Advisory Member of the University Council. His academic leadership extends to his role as Member of the Executive Board of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) since 2017, and as Advisory Board member for the Master Online Building Physics program at the University of Stuttgart.
- Vice-Rector for Internationalization (since 07/2024)
- Professor of Building Technology and Climate-Friendly Design (since 2012)
- Member of German Sustainable Building Council Executive Board (since 2017)
- Board member of Architecture Forum Baden-Württemberg (since 2013)
Professor Rudolph's research focuses on sustainable building practices, climate-responsive design, and urban adaptation strategies. His work bridges technical building systems with architectural design to create holistic solutions addressing energy efficiency, resource conservation, and user comfort across building and urban scales. He has developed expertise in space optimization, adaptive facades, and circular construction methods that respond to specific climatic conditions while maintaining architectural quality.
His publication record reveals a consistent focus on practical applications of sustainable design principles, with recent work emphasizing space sharing strategies, climate interfaces between buildings and cities, and intelligent building systems. The research trajectory shows increasing attention to urban-scale climate adaptation and the integration of social considerations within sustainable design frameworks.
Professor Rudolph actively contributes to the academic community through peer review for Energy and Buildings journal and membership on scientific committees for international conferences including PLEA. He serves on prestigious award juries such as the German Sustainability Award 'Sustainable Construction' and the Architizer Architecture A+ Award, influencing industry standards for sustainable design excellence.
As an educator, Professor Rudolph supervises diverse student projects ranging from climate-responsive pavilions at UNESCO sites to circular construction methods and age-appropriate housing solutions. His teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning through digital design workflows, climate analysis, and practical implementation of sustainable strategies. He has developed specialized courses on climate design tools, sustainable construction fundamentals, and interdisciplinary approaches to architectural challenges.
Professor Rudolph leads significant research initiatives including the BaWü-Labs Reallabor Space Sharing project (2015-2018) which investigated innovative approaches to maximizing space utilization in existing buildings. His current work focuses on circular construction methods, climate-adaptive building systems, and strategies for urban climate resilience, particularly addressing the challenges of an aging population and resource scarcity.
