Matthias Rothe

Dr. Matthias Rothe is an Associate Professor in the Department of German, Nordic, Slavic & Dutch with joint affiliation in Cultural Studies & Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota. His research examines intersections of aesthetics, political economy, and performance theory with focus areas in German modernism, Marxist thought, and East German cultural history.

Inspired by Foucauldian frameworks, his scholarship explores how knowledge practices transform subjective experiences. He investigates theater as a site of political expression and historical memory, particularly in contexts of ideological struggle. Current research trajectories include critical analyses of political theater traditions and the cultural legacy of the DDR.
