Matthias Liepe is a Professor of Physics at Cornell University and leads the Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) group in the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on superconducting materials under ultra-high microwave frequencies and their applications in particle accelerators and quantum computing.
- Diplom (1998) and Ph.D. (2001) from University of Hamburg
- Assistant Professor (2006-2012), Associate Professor (2012-2018), Professor (2018-present) at Cornell
His work aims to push beyond niobium-based SRF cavities by exploring compound superconductors like Nb3Sn, MgB2, and NbN, addressing challenges in surface resistance, superheating fields, and defect-free synthesis. The group contributes to the NSF Center for Bright Beams (CBB) and collaborates with national labs and industry. Current projects include energy-efficient accelerator technology and compact SRF cryomodules.
Recent publications analyze electron mean free path optimization, high-kappa material limits, and thin-film growth methods. Awards include the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and GPSA Faculty Award. The group actively trains graduate and undergraduate students, with alumni now at Fermilab, SLAC, and leading tech companies.
- Teaches PHYS 2208: Fundamentals of Physics II and PHYS 4490: Independent Study in Physics
- Advises projects on superconducting linac technology and microwave surface resistance
