Matthias Lecoq is an academic and urban planning practitioner holding dual affiliations as Associate Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Governance and Territorial Development (IGEDT) of the University of Geneva and the Center for Metropolitan and Community Studies in Lima, Peru. He concurrently serves as Project Manager for consultation at the Office of Urban Planning of the State of Geneva and founded the Geneva-based collective La Fabrique de l'Espace.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Geography from the University of Geneva
- PhD in Political Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (thesis on residents' role in city production)
Lecoq's research critically examines participatory ecosystems in urban planning within the Anthropocene framework, with recent fieldwork focusing on democratic legitimacy assessments in Paris and Barcelona. His work bridges theoretical urban studies with practical governance through civic technology applications, local democracy frameworks, and social geography perspectives. He actively contributes to international think tanks exploring urban transition paradigms and social planning methodologies.
At the Geneva Office of Urban Planning, he develops innovative consultation strategies integrating novel methodological tools. His conceptual work challenges epistemological foundations of urban studies while co-creating future city models through La Fabrique de l'Espace's collaborative initiatives.
