Prof. Dr. Matthias Kohring is a Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Mannheim since 2010. He holds a doctorate from the University of Münster (1996) and habilitation from Friedrich Schiller University Jena (2004). Prior roles include substitute professorships at the University of Münster (2005–2010) and research positions at TU Ilmenau and Jena.
His research focuses on science communication, public trust in media, disinformation, and media framing. He has published extensively in journals like Journal of Science Communication and Political Communication, addressing topics such as crisis communication, fake news, and risk perception in emerging technologies.
Key themes in his work include the societal role of journalism, challenges in science communication, and the impact of digital media on public trust. His recent studies analyze disinformation’s electoral consequences and trust dynamics during crises.
He currently leads the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at Mannheim and advises on media policy issues. His work bridges empirical research with theoretical debates in communication science.
