Prof. Dr. Matthias Hort is a Professor of Geophysics at the University of Hamburg, serving as Vice Director of the Institute of Geophysics within the Department of Earth System Sciences. His research focuses on understanding volcanic systems, magma dynamics, and eruption processes using advanced field measurements, numerical modelling, and remote sensing technologies. He leads projects on volcanic plumes, mantle dynamics, and atmospheric dispersion of volcanic emissions.
Key research areas include the generation of melts at mid-ocean ridges, dynamics of explosive eruptions (Vulcanian, Plinian), and the application of Doppler radar for real-time volcanic monitoring. He has pioneered the use of photogrammetry via UAVs to study volcanic dome growth and developed novel numerical models for ash dispersion. His work integrates geophysical, geochemical, and engineering approaches, with applications to volcanic hazard mitigation and climate impact studies.
Prof. Hort has secured DFG funding for projects such as plume-ridge interaction studies and Nicaragua volcanic gas dispersion research. His team collaborates internationally, including with institutions in Mexico, Japan, and the U.S. Notable contributions include first in-situ observations of pyroclastic currents and the development of volcano fast-response systems using machine learning.
