Helen Elizabeth Gaunt is a NERC Research Fellow in Volcanology at University College London's Department of Earth Sciences. She manages the Experimental Volcanology laboratory, utilizing high-temperature triaxial deformation equipment to simulate shallow volcanic conditions (up to 1000°C and 70 MPa pressure).
Her research focuses on magma degassing mechanics, permeability evolution in volcanic conduits, and geophysical signal generation during pre-eruptive processes. She investigates controls on explosive-effusive eruption transitions and Vulcanian eruption triggers through integrated experimental and monitoring approaches.
She develops instrumentation for volcanic ash monitoring, including the AACE-IG system for remote ash collection and real-time data transmission. Her work combines rock physics experiments with geophysical data interpretation to improve eruption forecasting models.
