Dr. Matthias Dilling is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on democratic institutions, political parties, the far right, and German politics. He holds a PhD from the University of Oxford (Nuffield College), where his thesis won the Walter Dean Burnham Award for best dissertation in politics and history.
He previously worked at Oxford University, Swansea University, and held visiting positions at Yale University and the University of Vienna. His academic contributions include peer-reviewed articles in journals like British Journal of Political Science, Political Studies Review, and German Politics and Society, as well as his book Parties under Pressure: The Politics of Factions and Party Adaptation (University of Chicago Press, 2024).
His research explores how political parties adapt to challenges from far-right movements and examines the resilience of democracy. Key areas include factional dynamics within parties, memory politics, and the interplay between history and contemporary political discourse.
