Matthias Batzill is a tenured Associate Professor of Physics at the University of South Florida (USF) and a Hans Fischer Fellow at the TUM-IAS (Technische Universität München - Institute for Advanced Study) since 2014. His research focuses on 2D materials, particularly graphene and transition metal oxides, with emphasis on surface science and photocatalysis. He earned his Diploma from the University of Göttingen (1996) and PhD from the University of Newcastle (2000), followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Southern California and Tulane University.

His research explores structure-property relationships in materials, including oxide surfaces, photocatalysis, and graphene interfaces. His work has resulted in over 80 peer-reviewed articles, including high-impact publications in Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Chemistry, and Physical Review Letters.
Selected scientific awards include the 2010 USF Outstanding Research Achievement Award, 2009 NSF-CAREER Award, and the 1999 Runcorn Prize for best PhD thesis at the University of Newcastle. He has presented invited talks at major conferences like the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Materials Research Society (MRS), and his work has an H-index of 28 according to ISI.
