Jochen Blumberger

Jochen Blumberger is a Professor of Chemical Physics at University College London (UCL) and a Hans Fischer Fellow at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS), hosted by Prof. Karsten Reuter. His research focuses on molecular simulation methods, including density functional theory (DFT), quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM), and their application to electron transfer reactions in biological systems, organic semiconductors, and oxide materials. He has pioneered computational approaches to study redox reactions, charge transport, and electrochemical interfaces.

Blumberger holds a PhD from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2001–2004) and was a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2006–2009) and UCL (2009–2014). He has received significant grants, including the ERC Consolidator Grant (2016–2021) and the Royal Society Fellowship (2006–2014).

His recent work emphasizes electron transport in multi-heme proteins, charge transport in organic semiconductors, and interfacial electrochemistry. Notable contributions include demonstrating heme-assisted electronic conduction in cytochromes and elucidating oxygen reduction mechanisms in hydrogenases. His research bridges computational methods and experimental observations, driving advancements in energy materials and biophysical systems.

Blumberger serves on editorial boards for Journal of the Royal Society Interface and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Italian Institute of Technology. His TUM-IAS focus group, 'Computer Simulation of Charge Transport in Organic Semiconductors,' explores novel computational paradigms for energy materials and biological systems.
