Dr. Matthias Alberti serves as Manager of the Geological and Mineralogical Museum at Kiel University's Institute of Geosciences since May 2023, following research positions at Nanjing University (2020-2023) and prior appointments at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (2017-2020, 2013-2015). His academic foundation includes a PhD from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2009-2013) and geology studies at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (2002-2004, 2006-2008), University of the Free State (2005), and University of Rajasthan (2016 Feodor Lynen Fellowship).
Alberti's research integrates Palaeontology, Geochemistry, and Stratigraphy to reconstruct Jurassic environments through stable isotope analysis of fossils. His work focuses on Gondwanan regions—particularly western India, the Himalayas, and Central Iran—examining ammonite biostratigraphy, bivalve thermometry, and sedimentary basin evolution. Recent publications demonstrate expanding scope into Holocene climate dynamics and modern analogues for paleoenvironmental proxies.
His 71+ publications reveal consistent methodological rigor in stable isotope (δ18O, δ13C) and trace element (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca) analysis, with growing emphasis on climate seasonality and tectonic-climate interactions. Key contributions include Jurassic temperature curves for northeastern Gondwana and identification of fieldwork errors in paleontological data interpretation.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship (2016)
Alberti maintains extensive international collaborations across India, China, and Argentina, with research supported through institutional positions and fellowship funding. His museum leadership facilitates specimen-based research while advancing public engagement with earth sciences. Current work integrates museum collections with cutting-edge geochemical techniques to address Jurassic paleoclimate questions.
