معرفی
Matthew Welsh is a Professor at the Australian School of Petroleum and Energy Resources (ASPER), which operates within the School of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology at the University of Adelaide. His work bridges psychological science with industry applications, focusing specifically on decision-making processes in high-stakes environments like the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Welsh's research program centers on understanding how cognitive biases and individual differences impact expert judgment under uncertainty. His work examines:
- Psychological biases affecting petroleum industry decisions
- Methods for identifying and mitigating biases through personnel selection and training
- Process redesign to better align with human decision-making capabilities
- Effective techniques for translating beliefs into numerical formats
- Expertise development and its relationship to decision quality
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on cognitive bias mechanisms (particularly anchoring, overconfidence, and hindsight bias), with increasing focus on practical interventions to improve judgment calibration across multiple domains including petroleum engineering, medical decision-making, and general cognitive processes. The research demonstrates consistent methodological rigor while maintaining strong industry relevance.
Dr. Welsh has received notable recognition including being named a Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer for 2020-21, during which he delivered presentations on cognitive psychology applications for industry decision improvement.
He actively supervises Honours and PhD students across both ASPER and the School of Psychology, and teaches undergraduate and Masters level courses in these areas. His supervision focuses on decision science applications in energy sectors and cognitive bias research methodologies, with students working on both theoretical and applied projects related to judgment under uncertainty.
