Matthew Wallace is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of East Anglia (UEA). He holds a Doctor of Science from the University of Liverpool (2017) and a Master of Chemistry (2013). His research focuses on advancing NMR spectroscopy techniques, particularly chemical shift imaging (CSI) combined with controlled concentration gradients, to study materials in response to environmental changes (pH, salt, ligand concentration). This work has applications in drug discovery, materials science, and chemical biology.
Key research areas include rapid pKa determination in various solvents, cation-polymer interactions, microbial fermentation analysis, and small molecule-protein interactions. He leads projects funded by UKRI, Leverhulme Trust, and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, including the development of NMR tools for drug/materials discovery (2020–2028).
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (Liverpool, 2013–2017); MChem (Liverpool, 2009–2013)
- Awards: Ronald Belcher Award (2017), 1851 Research Fellowship (2017), BRSG-NMRDG Prize (2024)
Advising includes two PhD students (Haider Hussain and Jonathan Hewitt) and two postdoctoral researchers (Dr. Todor Koev and Dr. Serena Monaco). Current projects span drug discovery, materials characterization, and NMR imaging innovations. He collaborates internationally, with recent work on microbial metabolism and enzyme complex analysis.
Lab affiliations include the Pharmaceutical Materials and Soft Matter group at UEA, and he maintains an Honorary Research Associate role at the University of Liverpool (2017–2018).
