Matthew Turner is an Associate Professor in Mathematics at the University of Surrey, within the School of Mathematics and Physics. He holds a PhD (2006) and MMath (2002) from the University of East Anglia. His career includes roles at the University of Exeter and University of Brighton before joining Surrey in 2011, where he was promoted to Senior Lecturer (2016) and Reader (2019). His research focuses on fluid dynamics, including boundary layer receptivity, vortex dynamics, sloshing fluids, and nonlinear wave interactions. He actively supervises PhD students and hosts fellowship applicants.
Research interests include: Fluid Mechanics, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Teaching includes advanced courses like MAT3053 (Mathematics of Weather and Climate) and MAT2050 (Inviscid Fluid Dynamics).
Publications span fluid dynamics phenomena such as particle deposition scaling laws, superharmonic wave breaking, and coupled vessel-sloshing systems. His work combines analytical methods with numerical simulations, addressing real-world applications in engineering and environmental science.
