Matthew Swenson

Matthew Swenson is an Associate Professor and Director of the Interdisciplinary Capstone Design Program at the University of Idaho's College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Boise State University (2017), along with a Graduate Teaching Certificate. He also earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University (1999). His research focuses on materials science under irradiation, mechanical design methodologies, and improving engineering education through capstone projects and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Swenson teaches courses such as ME 325 Machine Component Design and ME/MSE 415 Material Selection and Design. His research explores irradiation-induced microstructural changes in alloys, with notable work on ferritic-martensitic alloys and oxide dispersion-strengthened steels. He also emphasizes pedagogical innovations, including student-led educational tools and entrepreneurial integration in design projects.
