Matthew Stibbe is Professor of Modern European History at Sheffield Hallam University, specializing in twentieth-century German and European history. Educated at the Universities of Bristol, Sussex, and Humboldt University Berlin, he previously held positions at the University of Wales, Bangor, and Liverpool Hope University before joining Sheffield Hallam in 2003.
Stibbe serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Immigrants and Minorities and conducts research on state of emergency regimes since 1914 and Sudeten German communist Gustav Beuer. His extensive publication record examines civilian internment during both World Wars, German-Czech relations during normalization (1969-1980), and gender aspects of the 1918-19 German Revolution.
He has authored and edited numerous books including Civilian Internment during the First World War: A European and Global History (2019) and Debates on the German Revolution of 1918-19 (2023). His research has been funded by various grants, and he supervises PhD students in twentieth-century British and European history.
