Matthew Stahlman is a Lecturer in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on German and European thought from the late-18th to mid-19th centuries, with particular emphasis on Nietzsche’s middle-period works influenced by 19th-century scientific thought and the legacy of Kantian philosophy. He is a co-translator of the forthcoming Oxford World Classics edition of Nietzsche’s Human, All Too Human, emphasizing translation as a key component of his academic work.
Education: M.A.P.H. (University of Chicago), B.A. English (Lewis & Clark College), and B.A. Philosophy (Portland State University).
Awards & Grants: DAAD Research Grant recipient and former guest researcher at Universität Leipzig.
Research Interests: Explores the intersection of science and philosophy in 19th-century Europe, Kant’s influence on subsequent thought, and epistemic questions related to animal minds. His interdisciplinary approach bridges historical analysis with contemporary translation practices.
