Matthew Sleep is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management at the University of Cincinnati. Previously, he held roles as an Associate Professor at Oregon Institute of Technology (2017-2020), Lecturer in First-Year Engineering at the University of Kentucky (2020-2022), and Assistant Professor at Oregon Tech (2012-2017). He earned a BSc in Geological Engineering (Summa Cum Laude, University of Mississippi, 2004), an MSc in Civil Engineering (Virginia Tech, 2006), and a PhD in Civil Engineering (Virginia Tech, 2011).
His research spans geotechnical engineering and engineering education. Geotechnical work focuses on slope stability, seepage analysis, risk assessment, and sustainable use of volcanic materials like pozzolans. In education, he investigates ethics, social justice in engineering curricula, and first-year student pathways. Notable projects include ADA-compliant trail improvements using volcanic ash and mental wellness initiatives in engineering programs.
Publications emphasize interdisciplinary applications of geotechnical engineering and pedagogical innovations. His work bridges technical geotechnical challenges with societal considerations, reflecting a commitment to both infrastructure resilience and inclusive education.
