Matthew Skrzypczyk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French & Italian Studies at the University of Washington, where he joined the College of Arts & Sciences. His current roles include teaching courses such as French 302: Cultures of the Francophone World, French 447: Queer Histories and Fictions, and upcoming courses like French 223: Sex, Commerce, and the Making of Paris.
His research focuses on interdisciplinary analyses of 20th and 21st-century French and Francophone literature, film, and visual arts, with particular attention to themes of world-making, sexuality, hospitality, and citizenship. He engages with the works of prominent figures like Edouard Louis, Maryse Condé, Claire Denis, and Josué Azor.
Matthew earned his MA in 2017 and PhD in French and Francophone Literature in 2021 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Before arriving at UW, he served as a Visiting Lecturer at Oberlin College.
- Teaching: Courses on Francophone cultures, queer narratives, and Parisian cultural history.
- Professional Engagement: Co-coordinator for international association events with NEMLA, the 20th and 21st French and Francophone Studies Colloquium, and the Haitian Studies Association.
