Matthew Schipper is a Professor in Radiation Oncology and Director of the Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He also holds a Research Professor appointment in the Biostatistics department.
Dr. Schipper works to develop and apply statistical methods to improve the quality and length of life for patients with cancer or other illnesses. His research focuses on:
- Clinical trial design
- Data integration for prognostic models
- Statistical methods for personalized medicine
- Radiation therapy optimization
- Clinical decision-making tools
He is particularly interested in building predictive models for the efficacy and toxicity of treatment that can inform optimal treatment decisions for individual patients. These models are implemented in web apps to facilitate ease of clinical use.
Dr. Schipper has published extensively on these topics, with recent publications covering utility-based approaches to dose selection, life expectancy calculators for prostate cancer patients, improved designs for small sample clinical trials, predictors of pneumonitis after radiotherapy, Bayesian dose-finding methods, evaluation of predictive model performance with missing data, and the use of intermediate clinical endpoints in prostate cancer research.
