Prof. Daniela Thorwarth is a Professor and Head of the Research Section for Biomedical Physics at the University Clinic for Radiation Oncology, University of Tübingen. Her work focuses on advancing MRI-guided radiotherapy, adaptive treatment strategies, and AI integration in radiation oncology. She leads research in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based treatment planning, dose prediction models, and real-time tumor tracking for prostate, lung, and head-and-neck cancers. Her contributions include developing automated contouring systems and improving the accuracy of radiation delivery under magnetic fields. Thorwarth’s research bridges physics, clinical oncology, and machine learning to enhance treatment precision and reduce side effects.
Key research interests include:
- MRI-Linac integration for real-time adaptive radiotherapy
- AI-driven dose modeling and uncertainty estimation
- Diffusion-weighted MRI for treatment response prediction
- Automated treatment planning systems
- Optimization of hypofractionated radiotherapy regimens
Her recent studies (2023-2025) explore
- Deep learning for contour propagation in lung cancer
- Ensemble methods for dose uncertainty quantification
- MRI-based dose accumulation in prostate cancer
- Magnetic field effects on radiation detectors
Thorwarth collaborates internationally on clinical trials for MR-guided stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and leads initiatives to standardize quantitative radiomics in oncology. She has pioneered protocols for online adaptive radiotherapy of liver metastases and rectal cancer.
