Dr. Matthew S. McCluskey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Vermont's College of Education and Social Services. His research focuses on educational leadership, policy dynamics, and the privatization of public education, particularly examining neoliberal reforms and their impacts on teachers and students. His work critiques the spatial and policy inequities perpetuated by charter schools and explores teacher turnover in urban charter management organizations (CMOs).
Dr. McCluskey holds an Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University and prior degrees from Boston College. Before academia, he spent a decade as a high school English teacher, department chair, and school leader in Newark, New Jersey. He teaches courses such as Leading Learning Organizations, Affecting and Managing Change, and Seminar on Educational Policy.
His research has been published in journals like Journal of Education Policy, Urban Education, and Journal of School Choice. He received the 2024 Karen Lewis Outstanding Paper Award for his study on teacher turnover in urban CMOs. His recent work includes critical analyses of charter school discourse and its role in reinforcing systemic inequalities.
Key areas of expertise include critical policy analysis, neoliberal reform, teacher working conditions, and the intersection of education and urban sociology. His current projects explore power dynamics in education systems and the proliferation of privatization models.
