Matthew S. Makley, Ph.D., is Professor and Provost/Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Metropolitan State University of Denver. He previously chaired the History Department and served three terms as Faculty Senate president. His expertise spans Indigenous North America, water history (focusing on Colorado), and the American West.
Education: Ph.D. in History (specializing in Native American history and the American West) from Arizona State University (2007). Teaching Excellence: Received the 2016 Faculty Senate Teaching Award for Tenured Faculty.
Research focuses on Washoe tribal history, environmental justice, and water policy. Notable works include *The Small Shall be Strong* (2018) and *Cave Rock* (2010). His 2018 book was honored as an 'Outstanding Academic Title' by the Association of College and Research Libraries (2020).
Contributions include a documentary on Boulder's Long’s Gardens and advocacy for integrating Indigenous perspectives into academic curricula. Leadership roles include overseeing all academic programs, faculty, and 12,000+ students at MSU Denver.
