Matthew Richardson is an academic staff member at the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, Newcastle University. His research focuses on intersections of religion, identity, and space, particularly queer Jewish identities in postsecular Britain. He employs ethnographic methods to explore ritual performance, liminality, and communitas construction. His teaching includes modules on displacement/migration (GEO3159) and global interconnectedness (GEO1010).
Academic qualifications: MA in Religious Studies (Durham University), BA (Hons) in Religion, Philosophy, and Ethics (King’s College London). Research emphasizes geographies of religion, digital media’s role in faith practices, and anthropological analyses of conflict and care. Notable works include explorations of IS’s online presence and domestic religious practices in kosher care centers.
Presentations include discussions on fieldwork ethics (Durham/Manchester events), death studies in pandemic contexts, and queer identity formation. His work bridges anthropology and geography to interrogate how ritual and digital spaces shape identity negotiation.
