Matthew Purtill is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geoscience at SUNY Fredonia, where he directs the Quaternary Geology and Geoarchaeology Laboratory. His interdisciplinary research integrates archaeology, geomorphology, hydrology, geochemistry, and pedology to address questions about human-environment interactions spanning from the late Pleistocene to contemporary landscapes.
- Ph.D., Geography – West Virginia University (2018)
- M.A., Geography – University of Cincinnati (2013)
- M.A., Anthropology – University of Cincinnati (1995)
- B.G.S., General Studies – Kent State University (1992)
Research focuses include:
- Quaternary geology and eolian systems in the Midcontinental U.S.
- Geoarchaeological analysis of prehistoric settlement patterns
- Paleoenvironmental reconstructions for archaeological contexts
- Stream restoration monitoring and landslide/erosion mapping
- Application of GIS and remote sensing in archaeological studies
- Integration of social science theory with geological principles
Recent publications examine sampling bias in archaeological datasets, eolian sediment impacts on site preservation, and innovative geochemical approaches to understanding precontact waste disposal. His lab collaborates with institutions like the DEC and Applied Anthropology Laboratories, emphasizing student-led fieldwork in projects such as the Dewittville Creek Monitoring and McKendry Site stratigraphy. Awards include the 2022 Instructional Incentive Award for Classroom Innovations.
